Let's Face It: Our Kids Live in a World with A.I.
With the introduction of systems like Chat GPT into our lives over the last few years, parents are asking lots of questions about what a world which welcomes artificial intelligence means for the education and formation of their children. The Trump Administration recently committed by executive order to advancing America's A.I. dominance by requiring students to practice using generative A.I. in elementary school. As Christians, how should we engage with these technologies and how should we teach our children about them? How can we prepare the next generation to be technologically wise?
Joining us to discuss this topic is Catherine Moon. Catherine is one of the authors of Encountering Artificial Intelligence: Ethical and Anthropological Investigations, which was one of the sources that informed the Vatican's recent document on the relationship between artificial and human intelligence. Read more about Catherine's work below and join us for an evening of rich discussion.
Catherine Moon is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. She studies the role of human experience in moral discernment, meaning-making, and coming to know. Her present research focuses on the role of religious experience to civil life in interreligious and postmodern secular contexts as well as the relationship between new technologies and the common good. She is currently one of a number of scholars working with the Dicastery of Culture and Education to think about the ethics of artificial intelligence and education. She attended The Catholic University of America in the area of Moral Theology and Ethics for her doctoral studies. In August 2023, she successfully defended her dissertation on Edith Stein and the role of human experience in moral theology as a source of wisdom.
Prior to this she earned her M.T.S. from Boston College in the School of Theology & Ministry in 2018 and her B. A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College Annapolis in 2014. She has previously taught courses in theology, philosophy, and ethics at Georgetown University, Mount St. Mary’s University, and The Catholic University of America.
